Boca Raton, Fla. -- A man who took Viagra for impotence has been charged with five counts of introducing misbranded and misbranded drugs into interstate commerce, a federal investigation has found.
Talia Vina, 23, was arrested Monday for distributing misbranded prescription drugs and the sale of Viagra. Vina was indicted in October by a federal grand jury.
The Food and Drug Administration's Office of Criminal Investigations, which is investigating the alleged misbranding and misbranded sales of Viagra and other prescription drugs, said Vina was involved in the misbranding and distribution of Viagra and other prescription drugs to the federal government.
The drug, which is sold in more than 100 countries, was being marketed by Vina's firm. The drugs were manufactured at Vina's plant in Hawaii, the FDA said.
Vina was arrested for illegally distributing and selling misbranded prescription drugs, including sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The FDA said Vina's case does not lead to a conviction. Instead, Vina's case is about the importation and marketing of prescription drugs from overseas.
A federal grand jury in Honolulu, Hawaii, found Vina in possession of more than two million counterfeit Viagra tablets, the same amount of the drugs he sold at his company, Pfizer.
Vina, who is age 26, was arrested last August for allegedly distributing and using counterfeit prescription drugs. The FDA said Vina is a controlled substance under a federal investigation.
The FDA said Vina was the subject of a complaint from a friend and associate, who asked Vina to come to the FDA's office in New Jersey and ask the agency for comment.
Vina's attorney, David S. Cohen, said, "We are going to continue to work closely with Pfizer and our partner, GlaxoSmithKline, to help us protect consumers from potentially harmful drug ingredients and the health and safety of our customers."
According to a federal report, Vina was the subject of an investigation by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration into the distribution and sale of counterfeit versions of the drugs.
The FDA said Vina was being sold over the Internet by several websites, including Pfizer. The websites did not provide Vina with any information about the counterfeit drugs being sold.
The FDA's investigation, which is being conducted by the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations, will look at the Internet marketing of counterfeit prescription drugs.
The Internet investigation, which was initiated by the FDA, is part of a criminal investigation into drug counterfeitness. The investigation is ongoing.
The FDA said the investigation is being conducted by the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations.
Pfizer, the company that makes Viagra, was the original manufacturer of the drugs. The FDA said Pfizer had been using the drugs for marketing and promotion of Viagra for more than 30 years. The FDA's investigation into the counterfeiters that were made by Pfizer was ongoing. The FDA, which is conducting a public hearing on the investigation, said it would be conducting a limited investigation into the illegal distribution of the drugs.
